Getting Married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church
We are so blessed that you have chosen Sacred Heart to celebrate your wedding. We are here to help you create a day of joy that you will remember for the rest of your lives.
"I, __________, take you, _________, to be my wife/husband. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life." Those words are the heart of the Sacrament of the Marriage. The couple give their "consent" to "Take" each other no matter what the situation. These words are so important because in their commitment, the couple are also saying, "We will be a reflection of God's love to the world." Because those words are what our God promises us. God is with us every moment of every day no matter the situation. And God honors us by taking care of us without deciding for us.
In some ways, the Sacrament of Marriage is the most tangible of the Sacraments. We can touch and see wedded couples and see, hopefully, God's love at work. The couple are the outward sign of the sacrament. They are the "priests" of the sacrament. They are pledging themselves to each other. The priest is the witness for the State and the Church that they are ready to make this commitment.
This most serious of commitments is why the Church asks for a period of preparation usually six months because of the busyness of people's lives. During these sessions discussions revolve around areas of a married life that can impact it: money, children, sexuality and communication. These four topics are wrapped around by talk about prayer and faith. The reality is that the fullness of marriage can only be developed and found with Jesus in the middle. These sessions do not prepare a couple for every twists and turns life may throw them, but it starts them on a path of the necessity of communication, prayer, openness and integrity in their relationship.
Even couples who have lived together for however long, are always told they will feel and be different the day after their wedding because now the fact that they are committed to one another is very real. The way the Church approaches this sacrament is so rich and no couple should be unwilling to participate in preparing for it and embracing it.
